The Adi Ganga Canal in Tollygunge: A Lifeline That Needs Protection

The Adi Ganga Canal in Tollygunge, Kolkata, is an important water body connected to the holy Ganga River. This canal plays a major role in the daily lives of local people and also helps the city during heavy rainfall by carrying excess water and reducing flooding in nearby areas. Many people depend on this canal for household activities, and because of its connection with the Ganga River, it also has religious and cultural importance. Spiritual activities are often seen near the canal, making it an important part of the local community.

Sadly, the condition of the Adi Ganga Canal is becoming worse day by day because of pollution and human negligence. People often throw garbage, plastic waste, and other harmful materials into the canal. Waste water from nearby areas and factories also enters the canal, making the water dirty and unsafe for aquatic life. Due to increasing pollution, the natural beauty and environmental importance of the canal are slowly disappearing.

To protect the Adi Ganga Canal, people must stop throwing waste into the water and use proper dustbins instead. Regular cleaning drives should be organized by local authorities and community groups. Factories must treat their waste water before releasing it into the canal. Schools and local organizations can also arrange awareness campaigns to teach people about the importance of protecting urban water bodies.

As students, we can spread awareness and encourage others to keep canals and rivers clean. By working together, we can help restore the beauty and health of the Adi Ganga Canal for future generations.
