Sola Talab: A Historic Lake in Kolkata Facing Environmental Challenges

Sola Talab: A Lake That Needs Protection

Sola Talab, located on Narkeldanga North Road in Kolkata, is an important historical and ecological water body. The lake is unique because it contains 16 wells inside it, which is believed to be the reason behind its name. Many years ago, local residents used the lake water for household work, but today it is no longer used because the lake is very deep and accidents have occurred there in the past.

Even now, Sola Talab plays an important role in the enviroment. Stray animals depend on it for water, while trees and plants around the lake support birds, insects, and other organisms. Earlier, the lake also had many aquatic plants and animals, and fishing activities took place there. Unfortunately, biodiversity in the lake has reduced over time.

The biggest problem affecting Sola Talab is pollution. Garbage, plastic waste, and household waste are often thrown into the water, reducing water quality and damaging the ecosystem. Another major issue is excessive algae growth. Since the lake has remained unused for many years, algae have spread across the surface, reducing oxygen levels in the water and affecting aquatic life.

I believe conserving Sola Talab is very important for protecting urban biodiversity and maintaining environmental balance. Regular cleaning, reducing waste disposal, planting more trees, and limiting plastic use can help restore the lake. Awareness campaigns and community participation are also necessary to encourage people to protect local water bodies.

Students can also contribute by spreading awareness and participating in clean-up activities. If we work together, Sola Talab can become a healthier and greener ecosystem again for future generations.
