Dighi Pukur, located in Rai Charan Pal Lane, Gobra, Kolkata, is a local freshwater pond that plays an important role in the environment and daily life of nearby residents. This pond stores rainwater and helps maintain the natural balance of the area. It is home to small fishes, frogs, insects, and birds, making it an important habitat for local biodiversity. The pond also adds beauty to the locality and helps keep the surroundings cooler and greener, especially during hot summer days.
However, this valuable water body is facing several environmental problems. Many people throw garbage and plastic waste near the pond, which pollutes the water and affects aquatic life. During summer, the water level often decreases, creating difficulties for fishes and other living organisms. The growth of weeds and mosquito breeding also make the pond unhealthy and unsafe for the community. Without proper care and maintenance, the condition of Dighi Pukur may become worse in the future.
To protect this pond, regular cleaning and proper waste disposal are very important. People should be encouraged not to throw plastic or garbage into the water. More trees can be planted around the pond to improve the environment and support biodiversity. Local authorities should also monitor the pond regularly and take steps to maintain water quality and protect aquatic animals.
As students and responsible citizens, we can spread awareness and motivate local people to keep the pond clean. Even small efforts together can help protect Dighi Pukur and preserve it for future generations.
